Palm trees on Algeciras Plaza Alta decimated by red palm weevil

The palm trees that have adorned the Plaza Alta for many years have had to be cut down because 14 of the 16 trees are infested with the red palm weevil. Municipal workers were seen chopping the venerable old trees last week. The two that remain are now mere stumps. The red palm weevil has been spotted extensively throughout the Campo for a number of months and attempts are being made to save as many as possible without a great deal of success.
