GIBRALTAR (Agencies) The Spanish environmentalist group Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción said recently that they would be making a report to the EU that Gibraltar is using 'dangerous materials' as filling on Eastern Beach. The group says that most of the landfill 'comes from the work being carried out at the airport' . Spokesperson Antonio Muñoz said that, among other fill material, 'there are pipes that contain asbestos, as well as oil and grease'. These, he adds, are solid residues that need treatment. Ambitious plans for Eastern Beach include construction of some 2200 apartments, underground parking facilities, mooring for 300 vessels, a four-star 300-room hotel, offices and shops (image).
