Russian warning of Strait of Gibraltar as terrorist target

GIBRALTAR / CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR (Agencies/Photo: JimenaPulse file) The Secretary of the Russian Security Council and former head of the FSB, heir to the KGB, Nikolai Patrushev, warned recently of possible terrorist threat to key maritime oil transport chokepoints such as the Strait of Gibraltar. "Terrorist organisations, using contacts with pirates, are planning acts of sabotage on maritime communications and shore infrastructure in areas of hydrocarbon extraction." he said. Prime targets are the Straits of Gibraltar, Hormuz, Bab al-Mandeb, as well as the Suez Canal, said the Inerfax news agency, quoting Patrushev. The agency says that the high official did not elaborate on any terrorist military plans.
