SPAIN/CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR (Agencies) Tourism figures are up slightly -4,2%- over September last year, but analysts say that it is principally for two reasons: signs of recovery in the economies of two of the industry's most important markets, Germany and UK, and the fact that hotel prices have been cut significantly. The latest figures from the Ministry of Industry and Tourism show that 5.2 million foreign tourists visited Spain in September. Taking foreign and resident visitors together, there is an increase in the average overnight stay of 3.5 days per tourist, an increase of 1.1% over last year.>
However, figures for Algeciras show a significant downturn in both numbers and revenue: according to the Hotel Price Index website, the city's tourism revenue, at least in hotel/room prices fell by 12%, from an average of €96 per person/night, to €91 this year. On the other hand, a recent headline in a local newspaper said: 'Sotogrande tourism saved by sports'. The article says that hotel occupancy rates over the summer at the luxury resort in San Roque are about the same as over the last few years, 70%, though it was well above that in August, as usual.
Sotogrande S.A., the resort management company that is part of the NH Hotels group, reports a very slight increase in visitor numbers but says that whereas they used to spend three or four weeks at Sotogrande, they are now spending only a week or two. "And when they might have catered for 150 guests for a party at home," adds spokesperson Reyes MacĂas, "they now invite only 40."
