TARIFA (Agencies) Tarifa Council has for many years asked for the old NCO residence to be returned to the municipality, but the Ministry of Defence has said that it can bebought for €1.8 million. This is not a figure the Council is willing to spend, given the neglect the building has suffered for a long time. In any case, the 1,300 m2 building was constructed on municipal land, leading the Council to see its return to the municipal patrimony as a right, or as Defence's obligation. The latter is not willing to> admit that possibility so, should there be any doubt in the municipal mind, the BOE (Boletín Oficial del Estado) last Wednesday published a notice from the Instituto de Viviendas, Infraestructura y Equipamiento (INVIED) announcing the sale by auction of the building, for a minimum price of €1,823,592.72. (Translator's note: How do they come up with these figures? Are they still thinking in pesetas and converting?) True, the building, although almost in ruin, is on a magnificent spot, next to Plaza Mela, bordered by the old walls of the town to the South and East. It has privileged views all around, but the municipal coffers cannot afford it, so the auction is still open. Nevertheless the Council was studying the financial possibilities of bidding for it.
