Opposition accuses Madrid of pressuring to stop military use of the Rock

GIBRALTAR (Agencies) The GSLP-GLP opposition coalition said recently (before the elections, which could make matters even worse) that recent incidents involving ships of the Spanish Armada shows that Madrid "will not leave a stone unmoved in its permanent obsession of putting obstacles in the way of Gibraltar as a military base." The publication of documents on Wikileaks revealed secret communications between the Spanish and US Governments to that effect. However, election results in which the local PP Deputy, Jose Ignacio Landaluce, was elected overwhelmingly as Mayor of Algeciras, is likely to change the faces calling out for such pressure, but highly unlikely to stave it off - quite the contrary, given that Landaluce has been histrionically vocal in his Gib-bashing.
