Eight kilometers of rocky coastline still stained by Gibraltar sullage tanks fire

ALGECIRAS (Press release/More photos below) The experts of Agaden, the environmental group, have discovered that a further 3.8 kilometers of coastline has taken a hit fdrom the sullage spilt during the tank fire in Gibraltar last week. The impacted coastline is within the protected area of the Strait Nature Park, a highly vulnerable stretch of beauty between Punta Carnero and Cala Arena, specifically the coves known as Cala del Peral, Cala Secreta and Cala Arena. Not only is this a highly protected marine area and aside from being in a Nature Park, much of it is in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (and known as the>Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean). The sullage now present has "seriously unbalanced the marine system in the area because it has rendered much of the semi-marine fauna sterile or dead," according to Agaden, "and thus has repercussions on the area's food chain." The group also announced that it would be alerting the new Mayor of Algeciras to the dangers in the bay thanks to "all the dangerous activity there."
