Eddie Yome becomes Police Commissioner

GIBRALTAR (GibChronicle) Superintendent Eddie Yome has been selected to succeed Louis Wink as the next Commissioner of the Royal Gibraltar Police. The appointment was announced yesterday by the Gibraltar Police Authority [GPA] after Mr Yome beat off two other contenders for the top police job in Gibraltar, superintendents Jay Gomez and Richard Mifsud. 

The new Commissioner will take up the five-year appointment as from next April, when Mr Wink is set to retire. The appointment was made by the Governor on the advice of the GPA, the first time that the Authority exercised this function under the Police Act 2006.>>>

“This is the first time that the selection of a Commissioner of Police has been made in this way, following a selection procedure devised and implemented by a board of persons appointed under the Police Act,” said Richard Garcia, Chairman of the Police Authority. 

“The members of the Authority gave generously of their time to carry out the necessary wide-ranging assessment and comprehensive analysis of the candidates.” “The Authority considered that the candidates were of a high calibre, and wishes to thank them all for the thoroughness with which they prepared for the selection process and for their detailed applications, their presentations and performance at interview.”

The three candidates were asked to demonstrate to the Authority that they possessed the core competences of a Commissioner of Police, the statement said. 

In addition they were required to submit a paper setting out their vision for the RGP for the next five years in the light of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the RGP.

The paper included their assessment of the main issues affecting the RGP and an action plan to address them.

Each paper also indicated how the applicant intends to interact with the Authority in taking forward the RGP.

In addition, the Authority had before it the assessment of each of the candidates by the UK National Policing Improvement Agency following the completion of the Strategic Command Course, and the assessment of the outgoing Commissioner of Police.
