SPAIN One of Spain's most prolific inventors, Manuel Jalón, died yesterday aged 86. It was he who invented the ubiquitous fregona, or mop bucket. But he also invented the disposable syringe as well as a host of other industrial patents. Born in Logroño, La Rioja, he spent most of his life in Zaragoza. He studied aeronautical engineering and worked in the US and Finland for some time before settling in Zaragoza. He exported the fregona, which was praised as the tool that would 'get women off the floor' (floors were scrubbed on their knees, kids!), to over thirty countries and the original patent still belongs to his company, Manufacturas Rodex.
