Over 30,000 children started school in the Campo yesterday

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR  On the whole the first day at school for over 30,000 children went without incident. However, there were incidents at several school, where parents protested about various items. In Algeciras, parents at the new infants/primary school, Miguel Hernández (which last year was an Instituto) found that there were only two teachers, one each for the two Primary classrooms. No support teacher and no concierge, said the parents, who added that they would not be bringinging their kids to school today in protest. La Línea schools started out with the absence, or lack of, 23 teachers in all. The Councillor for Education, Javier García, met this morning with all Primary and Infants head teachers, and representatives of the teachers, to talk about the problems. On the positive side, the 220 students at the Santiago school started their first term without any incident of any kind - something to which they and their parents became unused to over the years.

In Jimena, the year started out also without teachers. Six of them in Primary, and one in Junior. Councillor Pedro Corbacho said that he had not been advised of any absences by the Junta's Education Department. Cristo Rey school in San Pablo,with 230 students, is waiting for the (presumably delayed) arrival of two, teachers and Aljibe in Estación, is missing one. The same applies to the José Luis Sánchez school in San Martín del Tesorillo, where two are non-arrivals. The Instituto in Tesorillo, which starts classes on Monday, there are two teachers as yet missing, and parents are ready to protestthat there are 38 pupils in one classroom and they are requesting that they should be separated into two lots. (Secondary students of El Secader, officially in the province of Málaga, attend classes in Tesorillo, of the province of Cádiz.)

In San Roque, over 3,000 Infants and Primary students began classes at their ten schools. At this writing, everything appeared to go without problems.

Students in Los Barrios, numbering 3,612 in the younger groups, also went to class without incident, according to Councillor Elena Andrades, who pointed out that there were nevertheless several items on the maintenance list to be carried out, including broken windows at th eN.S. de Guadalupe in Palmones, which were broken by vandals.
