TARIFA (Photo: EuropaSur) In 1812, during Spain's War of Independence from France, called the Peninsular War in British History thanks to Wellington's participation, the garrison of Tarifa, composed of only 3,500 British and Spanish troops under the command of General Copons, resisted attack after attack from the French forces, made up of over 10,000 men under the orders of Genweral Levalle. The battle was reenacted last Sunday as part Tarifa's Siege Bicentenary celebrations. Some forty actors took over the fortifications at Calzadilla de Téllez, while several hundred spectators looked on. Tribute was also paid to the fallen during the battle.
