Over 700,000 people in Catalonia, in the North East of the Iberian Peninsula, are going to vote today in 166 pueblos on the region's independence from Spain. The smallest of these, Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Barcelona), got ahead of the general poll some months ago, resulting in a 'Yes' of 90%. Catalonia (a.k.a. Cataluña or Catalunya in the Catalan language) is the most productive of Spain's autonomous regions and has long hankered after independence from what is considered as 'Madrid-centric' dominance. However, the Spanish Government has not authorized today's poll and it is thus 'non-binding', according to the Ministry of the Interior.
