Police still searching for explosives missing from La Línea house

Where one alleged terrorist
worked in Gibraltar
Flat in San Roque linked to the two Chechnyan men arrested in Ciudad Real · RGP helps search of Turk's workplace
LA LÍNEA (Agencies) The National Police are still searching for explosives that were missing from the flat where one alleged Al-Qaeda terrorist was arrested yesterday. Their search of the house yesterday, with trained K-9 units, only revealed traces of the explosives, but the police are convinced that they will find a great deal more. The alert came from the dogs, who reacted very nervously even though the house was almost empty of explosives; the home had evidently been cleaned shortly before it was raided. A flat in San Roque was also raided on Thursday, believed to be where the two men from Chechnya -one of whom is a deserter from Russian special forces- had supposedly been living. In Gibraltar, the RGP, together with the Spanish National Police, searched the workplace of the other member of the Al-Qaeda cell, a Turkish national. No arms or explosives were found at either place, but documents and computer information were taken to be analysed.

Mr Caruana confirmed that he had accepted an invitation by Sra Araujo to pay an official visit to the La Linea Ayuntamiento in early July. Mr Caruana looked ahead to the establishment of good cross-border relations with La Linea for the benefit of Citizens including maximising potential for the airport which had been blocked during Alejandro Sanchez’s term of office.

Campo de Gibraltar under new management: who's what, where and what's their name

CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR Below we offer a comprehensive view of the various investiture ceremonies that took place at all seven of our municipalities on Saturday. If you have been following the results of the elections, you will know that most of the Town Halls will be under new management as from Monday. You will notice that the investiture speeches have a common thread: promises, promises, promises. It remains to be seen if they are carried out over the next four years.>>>

La Línea owes over €4.2 million for landscaping

LA LÍNEA (Agencies) La Línea is in a list of the ten Spanish municipalities that owes most money to landscaping firms. In tenth place, the council owes over €4 million, according to the sector's federation, the Asociación Española de Empresas de Parques y Jardínes (ASEJA). The list is headed by Madrid (€64million), followed by Granada (about €10million), Zaragoza (over €8.5), Parla (over €7) and Alcalá de Henares (almost €7); after that come Huelva, Valdemoro and Almería (some €5million each) and La Línea de la Concepción. The federation says that they are being 'throttled' by these overdue debts and asks the government to 'sanction this kind of municipal indebtedness.'

What happened to La Línea's piece of the PIE?

EDITORIAL The situation at the border is by all reports becoming ridiculous. Long queues snake their way back into Gibraltar every day, summer heat adding to the misery. (The queue is difficult enough; I haven't taken my car onto the Rock for over 15 years. Have they got a loo anywhere near the loop these days?) Conjecture is rampant. Madrid is worried. Convent Place is outraged. Spanish and Gibraltar unions are planning joint demonstrations (is this the beginning of an entente cordiale?). And as usual it all boils down to money. A piece of the PIE, in fact.>

La Línea expects to make €30 million a year from toll; booth site chosen

Far from giving up on the idea of a toll for visitors to La Línea, Mayor Alejandro Sánchez met with his team on the Council yesterday, which came out with a figure for revenue of approximately €30 million per year as the result of the toll. According to a press release, the meeting defined how the toll - significantly called a 'decongestion tax' - would be applied to the millions of vehicles that come through the town on their way to Gibraltar. The team points out that there is an applicable legal framework for such a tax (which various bodies, including the Government of Gibraltar, have said would be illegal) and gives London and Riga (Latvia) as examples. The Council pointed out, too, that>

La Línea Mayor 'marches' to Algeciras

LA LÍNEA
(Agencies/Photo: EuropaSur)  The Mayor of La Línea, Alejandro Sánchez (PP), and members of his Council, took off on foot this morning from the Gibraltar frontier to the State General Administration offices in Algeciras. (In fact, he and his team were to be picked up by bus at Campamento...) The aim is to protest about what he says is neglect for his municipality, with over 10,000 unemployed, from the Zapatero central government. The manifesto he is to read at the doors of the state offices will undoubtedly mention that La Línea 'is owed some €25million since 2004'. However, Sánchez is unlikely to mention that the municipality has received €110million since that year, 'more than any comparable municipality of its size', according to PSOE Deputy Salvador de la Encina at a press conference yesterday.
