Gibraltar Eastern Beach gets under way

GIBRALTAR (Source & image: Gib Chronicle) The Government is this week starting a major civil works project at Eastern Beach Road, to lay new, essential underground utility infrastructure, and to refurbish, beautify and landscape the whole of Eastern Beach Road. The project is scheduled to take nine months. A Government spokesman has assured that the beach will operate normally next summer. The new dual carriageway to the new tunnel under the airfield at Eastern Beach travels parallel to Eastern Beach Road itself. Accordingly Eastern Beach Road will remain, as at present for the beach, access to homes and businesses in the area, and general circulation.>The project involves digging a wide trench along the whole length of Eastern Beach Road to lay the underground services infrastructure. The restored surface will then be beautified and landscaped. This will be done in 30 metre long sections.

The beautification and landscaping project includes:

• A new 150 space car park on the west side of Eastern Beach Road;

• The beautification of the existing beachside promenade with new, ‘wave-themed’ paving and the creation of additional roadside paving.

• A review of kerb lines and roadway widths to integrate wider pedestrian active zones, drop off lay-bys and passive landscaped zones.

• New coloured road paving.

- Introduction of raised, speed deterring pedestrian crossings.

• New Roadside parking, disabled parking and motorcycle bays.

• A permanent life guard boat house.

• Exposure resistant street furniture.

• Green and planted areas.

• A new, dedicated children’s ball playing area.

• A new, beachside, young children’s playground.

• An outdoor fitness area.

“The execution of this exciting new project will severely disrupt vehicular access to Eastern Beach Road during the next 8 months. Starting this week, access will be controlled by security officers and traffic lights, and will, generally, be limited to residents, businesses and emergency services only. Until the end of October, access (for drop off only) will be allowed, during good weather weekends to beach goers,” said a spokersman.
