Unions denounce police 'brutality' against them in La Línea

(Photo & source: EuropaSur) Some ten union representatives went to the Juzgado de Instrucción in La Línea this morning to present a denuncia against the National Police, which was carried out yesterday when municipal workers were demonstrating against their not having been paid their salaries since October. One union delegate said that the Police charge against them was 'brutal' and that it occurred about 900 metres from the frontier with Gibraltar. They are also asking for the resignation of the Government Sub-Delegate for the Province of Cádiz, José Saucedo and the Genetral Coordinator for the Central Government in the Campo de Gibraltar, José Andrés Hoyo. The unions have declared that, while a general strike has been called off, daily protests will continue at least until December 5th, "to see if we get paid by then.">
Eight demonstrators were injured at the demonstration held yesterday as the result of the riot squad of the Policía Nacional. Municipal workers have not received their full salaries for October.

According to the police, the demonstrators tried to "leave the authorized area", and it was their duty "not to allow it".

The unions' version, though, is very different. According to the provincial secretary for FSP-UGT -who had a finger broken during the charge- says that the demonstration was walking "along the authorized itinerary" and they had "no intention" of cutting off traffic towards the frontier.

Demonstrations have been happening every weekday morning since November 6, but yesterday the workers found their path blocked by a riot squad from Sevilla. The demonstrators told the squad that they were not headed for the border, but to the Palacio de Congresos, the temporary Town Hall, where they have congregated every morning.
