Campo municipalities owe €470 million

(Agencies) The recession is causing financial chaos in many municipalities, including those in the Campo de Gibraltar. Debt has increased to €469.3 million, with Algeciras heading the list at €180 million, followed by La Línea with a €108,000,000. San Roque, number three on the list, owes some €82.8 million; Los Barrios, €69,000,000; Tarifa, €24million; and Jimena €4,500,000. Castellar thus far continues to be free of debt. The type of debt varies in the proportions owed to Social Security, Hacienda (Inland Revenue), banks or suppliers, and, while the above figures are those given by the various councils, some are higher according to opposition parties.>Overall, 60% (some €108 million) of the total CdeG debt is owed to banks and comes under 'financial debt'.

Algeciras, on the other hand, supposedly owes nothing to the tax man or to Social Security, but one single suppliers, Urbaser, is owed €37,000,000. Mayor Tomás Herrera says it has been a difficult year because "of a lack of liquidity as construction has stopped and doesn't pay any taxes. No money is coming in but services must be kept going."

San Roque is also up to date with its Social Security payments and Hacienda, but owes suppliers some €34 million. The figures for this town are the most recent, December 2009, while the rest reflect the balance sheets of 2008, and should be viewed with caution as debt could be considerably higher as the recession bit harder last year.

In terms of debt per inhabitant, the list is as follows:
  1. Los Barrios €3,139 per person
  2. San Roque €2,830
  3. La Línea €1,696
  4. Algeciras €1,548
  5. Tarifa €1,348
  6. Jimena €430
  7. Castellar ---

RECEIVED BY E-MAIL, regarding Jimena:
Hay que resaltar que quien pasó la información no debía tener ni idea
de la deuda que mantiene el Ayuntamiento, que no es ni por asomo la que dicen esas cifras. A fecha de hoy, el crédito extraordinario y urgente firmado en Diciembre pasado aún no ha llegado, y hay una pregunta en el aire... ¿de dónde se están pagando las nóminas si ya en Diciembre no había dinero en caja?.

Whoever supplied the information can have no idea of the real situation (in Jimena), which is nowhere near these figures. Up to today, the 'extraordinary and urgent' credit line signed in December (see http://jimenapulse.blogspot.com/2009/12/jimena-council-approves-request-for-17.html) has yet to arrive. And another question: How are wages being paidif there was no money in hand in December?
