Environmentalists take on MoD in Gibraltar

GIBRALTAR / PHOTO ILLUSTRATION ONLY The Campo de Gibraltar environmental pressure group Verdemar-Ecologistas en acción is to file a formal complaint  with the EU Parliament against the MOD in Gibraltar following the underwater explosion of expired ordnance, it was reported yesterday. The action group says that the explosions are dangerous to people as well as the environment. It also points out that the ordnance is being detonated in what the EU has declared a Place of Community Importance and that the MoD "is taking advantage of a legal vaccuum" regarding the waters around Gibraltar, and complains that no warning is issued in cases like this "because the MoD hides behind military secrecy." Every time there are these explosions, says Verdemar, "hundreds of dead fish appear."
