Ombudsan takes on 'stolen babies' cases

ANDALUCIA/SPAIN - The Ombudsman of Andalucía (Defensor del Pueblo Andaluz), José Chamizo (photo), announced yesterday that his office will be taking on an investigation of the 'stolen babies' cases that have surfaced all over Andalucía. Chamizo said he was aware of the concern arising from the many cases, of which 50 come from La Línea alone, and at least another ten from Algeciras. Although he pointed out that there were problems about his ofice's jurisdiction (it is only allowed to investigate cases that are within a year and a half old), he wanted to make sure that he ould show support for people whose cases "are very complex.">In a related matter, some 20 families in the province of Cádiz have decided to join over 450 cases throughout the country in a collecive effort to have the matter sent to court for investigation. There are similar cases coming out in Cádiz, El Puerto, Puerto Real, Bornos, Arcos, Chipiona, Benalup-Casas Viejas and San Fernando, where, aside from La Línea, there are more reported cases of stolen babies than anywhere else.
