Winter whale watching campaign sights Finbacks and Sperms

TARIFA (Agencies) The fourth annual campaign of whale watching from land sighted 11 Finbacks (photo) and 17 Sperms. Organized by Circe (Conservación, Información e Investigación en Cetáceos) and backed by the Junta's Department of the Environment, this year's campaign was held during the winter months, beginning in November and with the help of 54 volunteers. As usual, the place from which sighting took place was at Cerro del Tambor, within the El Estrecho Nature Park, in Tarifa.>
The objective of this type of campaign is to sight the whales as they come through the Straits toward the Mediterranean, and follow their progress. The results show their heading and speed, plus the number, size, speed and heading of boats crossing or using the strait. The objective is to calculate the risk of collision.
"These campaigns always offer good results, and even though the weather this year was not very propitious, we did obtain quite a few sightings taking into account the number of days we were unable to work because of thE weather," says Pauline Gaufier, who runs the project.
