Two more arrests could follow in tobacco possession case, says RGP

GIBRALTAR (GibChronicle) As we reported here, Royal Gibraltar Police are investigating the activities of a retail commercial outlet at Laguna Estate, “which is suspected to be engaged in large-scale illicit tobacco trade,” following Friday’s large scale operation. An RGP spokesman said: “At around midday on Friday 18 February 2011, plain-clothes police officers intercepted a van loaded with twenty cases of tobacco in the area of Lathbury Industrial Park, the said van and tobacco being linked to the said retail outlet at Laguna Estate and>
suspected to be in contravention of its retail licence. Consequently a search warrant was obtained under the Tobacco Act and was executed at the said shop where further cases of tobacco were seized, in total 346 cases of tobacco valued at around £300,000 were seized pending further investigations.

“Two persons so far have been arrested, one of them a local man aged 26 years and a 27 year old Spanish national both of whom are closely linked to the said shop. They are both currently on Police bail. Further enquiries are being carried out and further arrests have not been ruled out."
