Council opens office for applications for help with storm damage

ALGECIRAS (Press conference / Photo: EuropaSur/Erasmo Fenoy) The Council has opened an office specifically for registering damage caused by the rain and hailstones that fell on the town yesterday. The office is on Plaza Rafael Montoya, at the Housing Department (Delegación de Vivienda) building. It is necessary to register damage to homes, buildings, offices, garages or businesses before receiving any help to get things back into shape. The Mayor of Algeciras, Diego Sánchez Rull, said at a press conference this morning>
that as far as it is possible to estimate at the moment, there were 487 incidents attended to by the 112 emergency service, caused by the sudden storm that registered 142 m3 in two hours yesterday between 11am and 1.30pm. The total number of flooded homes is 175 in Algeciras, plus another 45 in Palmones, in the municipality of Los Barrios. Final evaluation of the damage is expected by next Thursday.

The Mayorpointed out that the flooding probably occurred as the result of a series of unfortunate coincidences such as the amount of rain and high tide, plus hail that blocked drains in several areas. Technicians are analysing the state of a water collector on Calle Jacinto Benavente, repairs of which local residents had requested a month ago, warning of possible flooding if this was not carried out. That area of Algeciras was the most heavily impacted by the storm.

Little or no damage has been registered in public buildings or offices, although five schools were affected, one of which did not open for classes today.
