Port explosion hero nominated for new Gibraltar award

GIBRALTAR (GibChronicle) Opposition leader Fabian Picardo has tabled a motion in Parliament proposing that hero cop Jared Mackintosh be awarded the first Medallion of Distinction, the new civic award created recently by Chief Minister Peter Caruana. During the port fire, PC Mackintosh rushed to the top of the burning fuel tank to help rescue a badly burnt worker who died weeks later. The motion asks Parliament to acknowledge that PC Mackintosh risked his life in order to protect others. It further asks Parliament record and acknowledge his bravery at the scene of the fire and bestow on him the Gibraltar Medallion of Distinction. This will be the first time the medallion is awarded. Created following approval of a motion presented by the Chief Minister in July, it is awarded to people who make an exceptional contribution to the community which Parliament considers worthy of special recognition.
