Junta to save €200 million on medications

ANDALUCÍA (Agencies) The Junta de Andalucía is due to save close to €200 millions by substituting brand medications for their generic equivalents using exactly the same active components as the branded variety. This option will soon be open to the rest of Spain and its health services. Initially, the substitutions will affect the three groups of medicines that are most prescribed: gastric protectors, statins and platelet aggregation inhibitors. But pharmacies have been having trouble getting paid - in a sense, they finance the system because they pay full price for the medications they issue under prescription and then get payment from the Junta (or its equivalent in other regional autonomic communities). Payments have been late as the system is in deficit, which explains the urgent need for savings.
