Algeciras: 7.1 tonnes of cocaine seized in worldwide anti-drug operation

ALGECIRAS - Agencies
The Guardia Civil (GC) unit in Algeciras took part in a major anti-drug operation named 'Melissa', with the seizure of a total of 7.1 tonnes of cocaine being smuggled into Europe from South America. The operation began in 2007 when there was word of the existence of an international gang from Latvia, Belgium and Holland preparing to introduce the drug via Algeciras. It was discovered that a sailing boat anchored at the port was being used to contact mother ships in the high seas. The GC intercepted two of these ships, but the operation had grown significantly. Coordinated by Europol and Eurojust, 'Melissa' extended to the USA, Ecuador, Estonia, Germany, Israel, Iceland, Syria and Ukraine and has ended with the arrest of 30 people and seizure of over seven tons of cocaine.
