Nightmare on board

ALGECIRAS
As we reported here a month ago, a Sierra Leone-registered ship, the Eastern Planet, limped into Algeciras port with 16 crew aboard (12 Ukranians, 2 Russians and 1 Georgian - including 2 women it emerged later). In the hold is a cargo of cement sacks valued at €600,000. The ship's owners, whose agents are MH Bland of Gibraltar, seem to have abandoned both ship and crew - though the consignee is supposedly making arrangements to transfer the cargo, to which the crew are adamantly against given that they haven't been paid for months. Fuel on board is enough for a month, says the crew, but precludes refrigeration even if they were able to buy any food. As it is, they are being fed and watered by the Red Cross, the UGT union and the Algeciras Food Bank.
