Seprona confiscates 81dead birds from Jimena farm

JIMENA - Agents belonging to the Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza (Seprona) unit of the Guardia Civil, stationed at Castellar, located a number of insectivore birds at farm near the village of Jimena and within Los Alcornocales Nature Park. The birds had allegedly been captured with nets -also confiscated- in a manner that was once traditional but is now forbidden. Called furtivismo (translated as poaching), this and other forms are under constant vigilance by the GC in the hills and countryside between Castellar and Jimena. Only one person has been charged with poaching this time and faces heavy fines. Last year, a man was found to be carrying over 100 birds in his car boot; he was fined €8,000.
