Instituto Cervantes opening in Gibraltar is delayed again

GIBRALTAR (Agencies) A Gibraltar branch of Spain's equivalent of the British Council (or the Lyceè Francaise, or Goethe Institut), the Instituto Cervantes, was announced with much fanfare - but it has notyet been opened. Due to be inaugurated this month, the director of the Instituto, Carmen Caffarel announced recently that the event will not be happening until the second half of the year. - but no firm date was given, either. According to Caffarel,> there are problems with the building (part of the Bland building off Irish Town), which is presenting 'difficulties' because of its 'pecularities' and delays have occured as a result. "We are the most interested that the centre opens as soon as possible," she added. Normally, a member of the Spanish Royal family opens such an Institute. The Spanish Prince Felipe and Leticia will be opening two new Institutos in other parts of Europe soon but it might be assumed that there are stringent political reasons for them, or any other Spanish Royal, not to do so in Gibraltar.
