Leisure craft at top of sea rescue emergency list

TARIFA (Agencies) Most of the vessels subject to air/sea rescue by the Tarifa unit of Salvamento Marítimo are private leisure boats of varying sizes and capabilities. According to informaion supplied by the Ministry of Development, some 360 vessels in all were rescued in 2010, of which 112 were this type, 74 wre merchant ships and 23, fishing boats. Salvamento Marítimo has 21 coordination centres in all the coast of Spain, assigned, as these things are, by the International Maritime Orgnization. The sea area SM covers is 1.5 million square kilometres, the equivalent of three times the total suface of the country. Among the centres, some 12,338 people were rescue or asisted in some way, that is, 37 people each day and 5,264 medical emergnecies in 2010.
