Six people benefit from a single multi-organ donation

LA LÍNEA (Agencies) Heart, kidneys, pancreas, liver and tissue were transplanted from a single donor, saving three lives and improving the quality of life of three more. The multi-organ donation took place at La Línea Hospital this month, according to the coordinator of the transplant unit at the hospital, Luis Vallejo, who announced that all transplants were successful. The donation set into motion a complex procedure that eventually involved some thirty health care professionals from the local health authority (Área de Gestión Sanitaria) to the National Transplant Organization. Vallejo thanked the donor's family for "their enormous consideration at such a difficult time."So far this year, the three donations in the Campo de Gibraltar have reached the same number as for the same period last year. There were a total of 571 transplants in 2010, during which families authorized 261 donations of organs and tissue. Present figures show 31.2 donors per million inhabitants in this area, which is considerably higher than in the rest of the EU (an average of 18 donors) and close to the national average.

The age of the average donor is growing and thus generates fewer useful organs for transplants. This figure has decreased from 2.5 transplanted organs fifteen years ago, to the present 2.08.

Tday, the average age for a donor is 57, whereas in 1993 it was 38. In 2010, half of all donors were aged over 60, which is a challenge to the transplant teams that spare no efforts to increase efficiency. Acceptance of organ donations as a vehicle for solidarity has nevertheless increased considerably in Andalucía: in 1991, 62% accepted the concept, while that figure is now 80%.
