Zapatero will not stand for re-election in 2012

J.L.Rodríguez Zapatero - EFE
SPAIN (Agencies) José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, President of the Government and Secreatry General of the PSOE, announced at a party meeting yesterday that he would not be standing for re-election at the General Elections next year. The announcement comes after several weeks of speculation inside and outside of his party. Zapatero's most likely successor is Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, present Vice-President and Minister of the Interior, although the Minister of Defence Carme Chacón has promised to do battle for succession. Zapatero also announced that he would be staying in his post for the duration of the legislature, which caused the opposition, PP, to immediately demand early elections.
