Government to toughen measures against tobacco smuggling

SPAIN (Agencies) PSOE proposes amendment to reduce to 200 cigarrettes per month through borders. La Línea has been applying this measure at the Frontier since the beginning of the year. The party presented its proposal to amend the Suppression of Contraband Law in its passage through the Senate yesterday. In its presentation, it was said that there had been a 'substantial increase' in tax exempt tobacco, particularly across the frontiers at La Línea and from Andorra. However, sources at Spanish customs and Guardia Civil at the border with Gibraltar say that until the beginning of theyear, daily workers were allowed to bring over 600 cigarettes, or 3 cartons, per month. Since the current law is considered not to be specific enough to enforce properly, the amendment is expected to go through the Senate unopposed.
