Algeciras container port falls to 34th place in world volume

(Agencies) The Port of Algeciras (photo) fell to 34th place in the industry's reference list by Cargo Systems magazine. The report says, "In a bid to halt the decline in volumes, the port of Algeciras has frozen all tariffs for ships at 2008 prices. The port confirms that volumes are down as a direct result of the global economic crisis and volumes for 2009 are expected to fall to 3m teu." Only one European port, Rotterdam, is among the list's Top Ten, the rest being in Asia, and headed by Singapore, which holds the top position for the fourth consecutive year.
