Red Palm Weevil hits Gibraltar

(Agencies) The first case of Red Palm Weevil has hit Gibraltar, after spreading down the Mediterranean coast overthe last few years. Cases have been reported in the Campo de Gibraltar (Algeciras and Jimena, for instance). The matter was confirmed yesterday by experts from Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, who said that a case had been reported in Rosia in the summer. More recently, another case was confirmed in the grounds of Sacred Heart School, according top The Gibraltar Chronicle. This palm is now dead and must be cut down and incinerated immediately, they said. The weevil is very difficult to eradicate, particularly from the genus Phoenix, which is in abundance in Gibraltar, especially at Line Wall Promenade, the Mount, the Supreme Court, The Convent, Glacis Estate and Line Wall Synagogue.
