Moroccan workers problem highlighted at Unite UK conference

GIBRALTAR
(Gibraltar Chronicle) Delegates attending Unite the Union’s First Policy Conference after the amalgamation between TGWU and Amicus “were perplexed at the discrimination” suffered by Moroccan workers in Gibraltar, local District Officer Charlie Sisarello told the Chronicle yesterday. The local delegation that travelled to Manchester was led by District Officer Charlie Sisarello and included the Coordinator for Equalities Zohra El Gharbaoui and Michael Netto.>
The Unite Gibraltar Branch presented a motion agreed by the Gibraltar District Committee, supporting a campaign on the alleged “violation of human rights suffered by our members in Gibraltar who are non-EU nationals, mostly Moroccan,” and seeking “political, trade union and legal support for this cause.”

Mr Sisarello continued: “The motion was defended by Zohra El Gharbaoui, who spoke to the conference. It was passed unanimously and she received a standing ovation.”

He said that the two general secretaries Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley, had given their continued support for the campaign.

Mr Sisarello said delegates from different parts of Britain and other officers attending the conference were “perplexed and could not believe that in the 21st century and a British Overseas Territory in Europe, this was happening and discrimination existed.”

“When we informed the delegates that Gibraltar was governed by Social Democrats and the opposition party was a Socialist/Liberal Alliance, they were shocked and surprised that the Socialist party in Gibraltar was not supporting this human rights campaign. They were also appalled by the Gibraltar Government position taking into account that a number of trade unionists are government ministers, and like some of the opposition members, Unite members.”
