While the present heatwave is a bore, and many of us might already be wishing for winter, residents of the area will be aware that summer goes on for quite a while. Or does it? Having helped run a bar in Sotogrande some years ago, Prospero discovered that in fact summer ends sharply on August 31st. The contrast between that date and the following day was, and is, astounding. Visitors, mainly from cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Seville, left in droves, seemingly overnight, especially when the 31st was on a weekend. One well-known establishment holds an annual 'Alone At Last' party, and there's a pádel tournament of the same name, both for long-term residents of the area. Much the same applies to most of the summer hotspots - and only six days to go! (Don't tell anyone but summer ends officially on September 21st.)
