Preparations mount for Obamas' Costa visit

COSTA DEL SOL
Followers of every media on and around the Costa del Sol will know that America’s first lady Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha, 9, are coming for a five-day visit to Marbella tomorrow (Older daughter, Malia, 12, is at summer camp and won't be coming, it seems). But will the world’s most powerful man, Barack Obama, be joining them for his 49th birthday on August 4? Press sources say that the White House insists the president will not be joining his family, but hotel sources claimed that a cake has been ordered for the big night. It is also rumoured that the president will fly into the US air force base in Moron de la Frontera, where he would then be flown by helicopter to the coast.>
The Obamas have booked a total of 35 rooms at the luxury five star Hotel Villa Padierna in Benahavis, where standard doubles cost from €250 per night. The rooms are for staff and family friends, as well as for security guards. The latter have already been seen checking out the hotel and its luxury grounds. "You can tell because they have these little wires behind the ears," said a hotel employee (who may be right, though the guards have been using wireless technology for some time, precisely so they can't be identified so easily).

After their stay, the group will be taking a private jet to Mallorca, where they are scheduled to spend a day at the Spanish king’s Marivent Palace.

The Hotel Villa Padierna is part of the Ritz-Carlton chain, and is located in Benahavis between Marbella and Estepona. Said to be ‘suitable for royalty’ the Tuscan-style resort boasts three golf courses, five restaurants, a spa, and private villas for up to €5000 a night.

Residents of Benhavis are complaining in the Spanish media that the hotel is not in Marbella, though its own website says it is. Strictly speaking, Benhavis is part of the municipality of Marbella, which is well known throughout the world as a luxury resort town. It has had bad press for several years, however, with corruption andcrime grabbing headlines everywhere. Perhaps the Obamas can turn things.
