Andalucía accepts anti-bullfighting proceedings

ANDALUCÍA/SPAIN (Photos: JimenaPulse file/Jimena 2007) The Parliament of Andalucía recently accepted an Iniciativa Legislativa Popular (ILP, or Popular Legislative Initiative, similar to a private members bill) presented by an animal protection organization, CIMA, that, if approved and made into law, would forbid bullfighting and any popular festivity where an animal is mistreated or killed. CIMA must now collect at least 75,000 signatures for the next stage in the proceedings. Similar initiatives, for and against bullfighting, have been proposed in other autonomous regions of Spain, after the corrida was forbidden in Catalonia earlier this year.
