Portugal drug arrests: Two Brits with Gibraltar connections arrested

GIBRALTAR (Agencies) Two Britons suspected of belonging to an international trafficking ring were arrested by Portuguese police last week. Six tons of hashish were confiscated in the operation. It is understood that the Royal Gibraltar Police assisted in the operation. The Britons are aged 38 and 40, according to an official statement, which did not provide their identities. They appeared before a magistrate who ordered they be held in custody. It is not known exactly what the connection with Gibraltar is, or why the RGP was asked to intervene but it is believed that the men have a local link.>
(Gibraltar Chronicle) The operation came after a yearlong investigation into a suspected British-led ring based in Portugal's southern Algarve region. Police said an international investigation is continuing.

Police said today that armed officers stopped a truck containing three tons of hashish and found a similar amount at a different location.

The statement said the operation came after a year-long investigation into a suspected British-led ring based in Portugal's southern Algarve region.

Large seizures of hashish from Morocco are common in southern Portugal.
