'Devil's advocate' arrested in Spain

SPAIN (Agencies) Giovanni di Stefano, called the 'devil's advocate' because he defended Saddam Hussein, Chemical Ali and Slobodan Milošević,among others, was arrested yesterday in Palma de Mallorca on a British warrant that acuses him of 18 counts of embezzlement, fraud and theft in the UK, over the oeriod between 2004 and 2009. Having won fame as the lawyer for impossible causes, Di Stefano is also accused of practicing law there without a licence and of taking a payment of £120,000 from the wife of a man on life imprisonment and not carrying out the appeal he was paid for. When he was arrested, he told the police he was scheduled for an operation, so he was taken straight to the hospital under custody, where he awaits the operation and extradition proceedings.
