Guadiaro golfer takes Dubai Desert Clasic

SAN ROQUE/Guadiaro (Agencies) European golf is not short of world stars at the moment, but you can certainly add another to the list - Spaniard Álvaro Quirós, born and bred in Guadiaro. Known for his big-hitting, the 28-year-old now has five Tour titles to his name and the latest of them has made him the circuit's leading money-winner so far this season. After finishing second in the Qatar Masters a week earlier, Quiros holed-in-one on Sunday en route to a one-stroke victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic."It was like the last piece of a happy birthday cake," he said of his ace at the 11th. "I have to recognise it might be one of the more exciting moments of my career." What made his victory all the more satisfying was who he beat>
- top three Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Tiger Woods and seventh-ranked Rory McIlroy were all in the field.

All but Kaymer were in contention at various stages in the final round, but made crucial errors.
Westwood lost a ball up a palm tree at the 17th - the same happened to Quiros as he took seven at the eighth - and followed a double bogey there with another six at the par-five last to come 15th.

Long-time leader McIlroy, 11 under for his first two rounds, played the last two in five over to end up only 10th.

And from one behind after 54 holes, Woods managed only a closing 75 to be 20th.

Quirós quickly put his success in perspective, though. "They beat me more often than I beat them - that's why they are one, two, three in the world," he said. "I want to be more in contention with them, but I am very proud of myself. I made triple bogey and still fought for the title."
