GIBRALTAR (Photo & Text: GibChronicle/Brian Reyes) Priceless historical documents have been found in a ramshackle storeroom deep in the bowels of the Supreme Court building. Court staff clearing out old archives came across a cardboard box stuffed with folded vellum documents, handwritten in intricate calligraphy. On closer inspection, they realised with amazement that they were looking at the original Charters that established the court centuries ago and granted the Rock’s inhabitants legal rights. The Fifth Charter of Justice, dating back to 1830, established the principle of the independence of the judiciary in Gibraltar. Whatever their monetary worth, their historical value is incalculable.
