ALGECIRAS After over three months of watching the water and identifying photos from 2009 and 2010, over 400 individual common dolphins have been registered in the Bay of Algeciras so far, according to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), working with the Doñana Bilogical Station (EBD) in cooperation with CIRCE (Conservación, Información y Estudio de los Cetáceos) and CEPSA, the oil company. The study will be continuing for the rest of the year. The dolphins move between the bay itself and the deepest channel in the strait, but use the two areas for different purposes, details of which will emerge at the end of the study, although it is known that the bay is used for feeding and the channel for moving from one place to another, such as the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. So far, the watchers have sailed some 60 hours in the water, taking over 16,000 photos, which, added to the 25,000 taken in 2009 and '10 "add up to some very interesting material to work with," according top Renaud de Stephanis, one of the leading investigators.
