Abandoned, starving mare's owner is denounced

(Photo: europasur.es)
She was feeding a foal somewhere · Couldn't walk, hobbled
LA LÍNEA Prodean, the animal rescue centre, last week denounced the owner of a mare that appeared the week before at their gates. She was malnourished and hobbled. As she couldn't stand, the firefighters had to be called in to hoist her into the centre. She was probably also breast feeding a foal, which did not appear at the same time. The centre's vet decided that the animal was in pain, having probably been beaten with a metal object and may have had her hip broken as she had trouble staying upright.. The hobble had bitten into her skin and she had been that way for some time. Ana Borrallo, representing Prodean, said that it was decided to put her down. "It was very sad," she said. "We hope the owner is found (she was chipped) and punished." This is not an uncommon thing: horses are abandoned frequently. It is essential that the matter be reported to the Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza de la Guardia Civil (Seprona), so they can act.

44 deer heads confiscated in three different operations

Illustration only
Part of Seprona campaign against illegal hunting
JIMENA The Seprona unit of the Guardia Civil  based in Castellar recently raided three farms in the municipality of Jimena, where they found, and confiscated, a total of 44 deer skulls and antlers. None of these could be justified through documents of legality from the Junta's Department of the Environment, and included one that had been shot very recently. In addition, at one of the fincas, a captured doe was also confiscated, as well as various illegal implements used to capture these animals. The Seprona campaign will be specially vigilant during the current rutting and birthing season.

Seprona confiscates 460 kilos of pine cones

Also known as Stone Pine
SAN ROQUE (Agencies) Five people have been fined, and 460 kilos of pine cones confiscated, for collecting the cones illegally. The cones' seeds are known as pine nuts, used in cooking, and they come from the pinus pinea L tree. The incident occurred when the Guardia Civil environmental crime unit, Seprona, was carrying out a special watch in a campaign against the illegal collection of species from the countryside. A 4-wheel drive vehicle and trailer were seen coming out of a private property near San Roque last week. It was followed and stopped, the five occupants identified and the vehicle searched, whereupon four large sacks of pine cones were discovered, allegedly taken illegally from the property. The five were fined for taking fruits out of season and without permission from the property owner or the Department of the Environment, which is charged with regulating the seasons during which certain fruits may or may not be collected. Gibraltarian denounced for illegal building

(Photo: Guardia Civil)
SAN ROQUE (Agencies) The Guardia Civil's Seprona unit have denounced illegal building in a protected zone. Last April they noticed that a 150m2 building was being erected on a plot of land on the connecting way from Jimena to Los Chaparrales. The owner, a Gibraltarian, did not have any kind of licence or permit to do so. In any case, he would never have been able to obtain it because this is a protected area. He has been accused of various town planning and environmental infractions and the matter is now in the hands of the courts.
