Boulder smashes into road, passers-by 'narrowly missed'

(Gibraltar Chronicle) A massive boulder landed on Green Lane behind Gardiner’s Road on Tuesday morning, narrowly missing three residents of the area as they drove to work. The boulder fell from the cliffs above and gouged a channel through the undergrowth before coming to a standstill in the lane, which runs from the old casino to Devil’s Gap battery. Boulders of this size are rarely dislodged in this area, though rock falls are common. Residents pointed to numerous smaller – though nonetheless dangerous – rocks littering the roadside and said they have asked for safety fencing to be installed in the slopes above, which authorities have proved reluctant to install because of cost.
