UK gets final warning on London and Gibraltar air quality

GIBRALTAR
(Image: gibraltarairquality.com) The European Commission issued Britain with a final warning over air quality standards in London and Gibraltar yesterday. EU air quality legislation sets a limit on the maximum concentrations of certain pollutants. Britain has failed to comply with standards for dangerous airborne particles known as PM10, which are emitted by industry, traffic and domestic heating, the Commission said. These particles can cause health problems including asthma, cardiovascular problems, lung cancer and premature death. According to the latest data, the Greater London Urban Area and Gibraltar exceed PM10 limits. If Britain fails to take measures to comply with the legislation, the Commission could refer the case to the European Court of Justice.
