Court orders closure of 'illegal animal shelter'

ALGECIRAS (Agencies) A court in Algeciras has sent down a final closure decision on Huerta La Aceitera, in the Botafuegos area of the town. The sentence says the buildings on the property, which dates back to  1896, were built without permission from the Town Planning Department of Algeciras. The owner, María del Carmen (photo by EuropaSur), had pleaded for leniency in February, but her consternation fell on deaf ears. "Where am I goiung to go with my animals now?" she asks. At some point she had permission for a 'zoological nucleus' in which to house her 57 cats and 34 dogs, with which she built septic tanks and proper facilities for her animals. But there was no permission for a house, even though there had been one on the property since at least 1959.
