Spaniards still hold €1,731million in old pesetas

(Agencies) According to Banco de España (Spain's Central Bank), there are still €1,731,000,000 in the country's old money that has yet to be exchanged into the European currency. Of these, €916million are in paper and the rest, €815million in coins. The bank press release does not say how or where the old money is kept but it used to be a 'custom' in Spain  (and elsewhere) to keep it sewn into the mattress. It is still possible to exchange pesetas for euros, but this has to be in sufficient quantity to whet the appetite of your bank manager, or the pile has to be taken to the central bank's office in Madrid.
