Gibraltar Public Works Department loses 25% of employees - Government is delighted

GIBRALTAR Around 50 employees of the Buildings and Works department have opted for the enhanced Early Exit Package that was offered by the Gibraltar Government as part of the restructure agreement. A communiqué from 6 Convent Place (photo) says, "The Government is delighted with the response from Buildings & Works Department employees to the offer of Early Exit prior to the establishment of the new Agency. 48 employees have applied. They cease working to-day, and none of them will be replaced. This represents a permanent reduction in the workforce of 25%." The Early Exit Package is part of a deal signed by Government and Unite the Union, whereby the Public Works Department becomes a government agency that is scheduled to move to Waterport in March.>The idea for the move and its changes comes about after much discussion with the union. However, in a general sense, they mean that tenants of public housing will be the greater beneficiaries inasmuch as Gibraltar is divided into six areas, with specific work assignments.

Extra pay will only be given to the new agency's workers if, at the end of each quarter, no tenant has had to wait more than three months for a job to be finished.

A special working unit has also been created that will take care of renovations and repairs to empty housing. Again extra pay will only come about if the empty housing is improved within a specified period of time. Government says that this scheme will mean that "relocation will be much faster."

Government has also reserved the right to give any particular job to private enteprise "to guarantee quality service to public housing tenants."
