Madrid socialists choose transexual candidate

Carla Antonelli
MADRID (Agencies) The Partido Socialista de Madrid (PSM) has chosen Carla Antonelli, a transexual actress and gay activist, for their candidates' list for the May 22 local elections to the Madrid Assembly. The first person in Spain to request an official change of name and gender identity on her DNI (National Identity Document), and obtaining it, Antonelli could thus become the first transexual to be officially elected to that body. She has worked closely with the PSOE since 1997, working on the same-sex marriage bill and the Transexual Law, which included the possibility of transexuals to request transfer to female sections in prison without the need for reassignation by surgery. Antonelli left the political scene in 2007, ostensibly for 'work reasons'. She now returns with a bang.
