New Courts building began operating on Monday

GIBRALTAR (Agencies/Photo: GibChronicle) The new building that now houses the Supreme Court, a Court of Appeal and a revamped court library, as well as meeting rooms for lawyers to consult with clients was opened for business on Monday, after an initial investment of £8million. The courts are fitted with state-of-the-art equipment that range from individual monitors for video evidence to a modern PA system and surveillance cameras. Facilities now also include toilets, which, incredibly, the previous courts had lacked. The overall design retains the main features of the old building while introducing steel and glass into the design, aimed at retaining and protecting Gibraltar’s architectural heritage while introducing modern elements too. “It’s a magnificent new facility for the courts,” said Chief Minister Peter Caruana on a pre-opening visit (photo, with Minister of Justice Daniel Feetham).
